Courses and Requirements

The program balances structured coursework with independent research, fostering both breadth and depth across social and political sciences. 

Years 1-2: Foundational Training  

In the first year, all students take a common set of courses to build or refine skills in research methods, statistics, and multi-disciplinary knowledge in social and political sciences. The curriculum integrates quantitative and qualitative methods, with hands-on applications in real-world datasets and case studies. Between the first and second years (June-August), students participate in a research internship, working closely with world-class faculty on ongoing projects.  

The second year features advanced courses. Students select three electives for specialization, and designing and executing an original research project, culminating in a journal-length paper under faculty guidance. This early engagement ensures students develop independent research skills from the outset. 

Years 3-4: Dissertation Focus  

The final two years are dedicated to dissertation research. Students participate in research workshops, field-specific reading groups, and department seminars featuring leading global scholars. They receive support in conducting research, including data collection, analysis, and ethical considerations. Opportunities for international exchanges enhance their work (increased stipends are available for supporting research stays at foreign institutions), and students receive coaching on presenting job market papers and navigating the academic job market.
