Does International Law Still Matter?
This is the provocative title chosen for Jurists’ Day 2026, which took place last April 21 at Bocconi.
The event opened with welcoming remarks by Dean Pietro Sirena, who reflected on the identity, growth and ambitions of the School of Law, before the thematic introduction delivered by the Student Representatives. The first panel, featuring Angelino Alfano, Elisabetta Righini and Marco Lorefice, explored how international law continues to influence trade relations, energy security, strategic industries and the relationship between law and geopolitics.
The programme then continued with the Moot Court Competitions awards ceremony and the presentation of the School’s Legal Clinics, highlighting the practical and experiential dimension of legal education. The second panel, focused on whether international law is facing crisis or resilience in an increasingly fragmented global order, featured Arthur E. Appleton, Giulia Elisabetta Uboldi and Grazia Eleonora Vita, who offered valuable perspectives on the future effectiveness of international law.
The Student Representatives introduced and moderated both panels, helping guide the discussion throughout the day.
Everyday Safety: How the Bocconi System Works
Safety at Bocconi is the result of a structured organization that integrates infrastructure, technology and people. At its core is the control room, which continuously monitors indoor and outdoor spaces through a system of over 800 cameras and dedicated operators responsible for surveillance and response. This is complemented by an on-campus healthcare service, including an infirmary open on weekdays, first responders and a daily medical service. In the areas of prevention and emergency management, the model is based on multiple levels that must operate in a coordinated manner: prevention, protection, emergency response and individual behavior.
Here are some figures: 800 cameras monitoring indoor and outdoor spaces; 1,803 fire extinguishers; 465 hydrants; 184 hose reels; 12,090 smoke detectors (including student residences); 10 AEDs; 350 emergency floor plans; 9 assembly points.
