Bocconi University’s PhD in Computing Sciences and Artificial Intelligence is a four-year, full-time program taught in English within the Department of Computing Sciences. Doctoral fellowships are available, funded by the Tech Europe Foundation (TEF). The program trains independent researchers with strong mathematical and computational foundations, equipping them to advance fundamental research in computer science and artificial intelligence. Research areas span theoretical computer science, algorithms, computational complexity, cryptography, optimization, and the foundations and applications of machine learning, including natural language processing and computer vision. Moreover, they connect to interdisciplinary fields such as computational neuroscience, biology and the physics of complex systems.

The first year of the program provides advanced coursework in the mathematical and computational foundations of computer science and artificial intelligence, bringing students to the frontier of research. In the second year, students undertake research-oriented courses (including courses offered by visiting professors) and develop their individual research program. The third and fourth years are devoted to original research and dissertation writing.

Students join an international research community whose faculty bring together expertise in computer science, mathematics and physics, with seminars and reading groups providing opportunities for scientific exchange and collaboration. The program welcomes highly motivated candidates with a strong scientific and mathematical background and graduate training in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Data Science or related fields. The program prepares graduates for research careers in universities, research institutes and industry.
