Marc Chagall - A Tale of Two Worlds

The exhibition “Marc Chagall. A Tale of Two Worlds. From the collection of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem”, hosted at the MUDEC will approach Chagall’s works from a new point of view, placing them in the context of his cultural background, made possible by the extraordinary collection of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. The exhibition will feature a selection of over 100 works, most of which were donated by the artist's family and friends, and will be dedicated in particular to Chagall’s graphic works and his activity as a book illustrator.

It will highlight some of the fundamental themes of the artist’s life and creative work: from his roots in his native Vitebsk (in present-day Belarus), described with love and nostalgia in the series My Life, to the encounter with his beloved wife Bella Rosenfeld, whose books he later illustrated.
These books, titled Burning Lights and First Encounter and From My Notebooks, are dedicated to Bella’s memories of life in a traditional Jewish community and were published after her premature death.
Chagall’s original drawings for the books will be displayed in the exhibition.

The exhibition project will place these works in the cultural context from which they sprang: the language, the religious customs, and the social conventions of the Yiddish Jewish community, just like the colors and shapes that Chagall assimilated as a child and which he best expressed as an adult. It will also explore the relationship in Chagall’s works between art and literature and between language and content.
