Mattia, Dario, and Nicolò discussed their theses on July 17 and 18. All three will move on abroad, to New York, Stockholm, and Oxford, respectively, to conduct research in different fields of AI

Mattia, Dario, and Nicolò, all 23 years old, are the first three graduates of the Master of Science (MSc) program in Artificial Intelligence, launched in 2023 as a direct continuation of Bocconi's three-year Bachelor's program in Mathematical and Computing Sciences for Artificial Intelligence. The Master of Science, directed at its launch by Luca Trevisan, who passed away prematurely, and now led by Laura Sanità, aims to train students interested in mathematics and computer science and the development of systems and software with Artificial Intelligence potential, combining the study of theory with an in-depth exploration of the main applications of machine learning. In addition to graduating on July 17 and 18, Dario, Mattia, and Nicolò share the same post-graduation path: all three are reaching arrangements with three different universities around the world to pursue academic careers.

"The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence aims to train highly qualified professionals,” explains course director Laura Sanità, professor in the Department of Computing Sciences at Bocconi. “Our graduates have advanced skills in machine learning, optimization model development, and intelligent solutions, and follow a diverse course of study ranging from physics to statistics, neuroscience, computational biology, and cryptography. Students have also contributed significantly to the development of the program through projects and internships at leading companies and institutions”. The forecast for the coming years, explains Sanità, “is for an expansion in the number of students enrolled in the degree program."

Mattia Scardecchia, from Grottaferrata (Rome), had also attended the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematical and Computing Sciences for Artificial Intelligence at Bocconi (as did Dario and Nicolò) before enrolling in the Master of Science program and has always been passionate about mathematics: “I am fascinated by the enormous impact that AI can have on the world and I want to be at the forefront of its development,” he says. In September, Mattia will fly to New York University, where he will pursue a PhD in machine learning. “Together, Bocconi's Bachelor's and Master of Science degrees provide very modern and interdisciplinary tools. There is a very fruitful dialogue between very different subjects.”

Dario Filatrella, from Salerno, will also go abroad for a PhD: his destination is the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Dario graduated “with a thesis on the problem of optimal transport, which is a work at the intersection of computer science and mathematics,” while in Stockholm his studies will focus on information theory.

While Nicolò Stranieri, from Manduria (Taranto), discussed a thesis on fine tuning and upscaling on models based on biometric data. Nicolò is in talks with the University of Oxford, where he already gained experience during his Master of Science. “There, I would work on Artificial Intelligence applied to genomics.” “The strength of the Master of Science? That in almost every course we were able to develop a project, thus putting into practice the knowledge we learned.”
