Highlights from the 2025 Bocconi Accounting Symposium: advancing research through dialogue and collaboration

The Bocconi Accounting Symposium 2025, held on June 16th and 17th, has featured prominent academics from around the world to discuss the latest developments in accounting. Hosted in the Leonardo Del Vecchio Building, the third edition featured a very selected range of presentations and discussions on critical and current topics in the field.

During a dynamic two-day symposium, participants engaged in a series of sessions exploring a diverse range of topics.

On the first day, Frank Zhou, from Wharton, shed light on the employment patterns and career trajectories of accountants. Sinja Leonelli of NYU presented her analysis of how regulators’ disclosure can influence employee whistleblowing, while Brandon Gipper, from Stanford, shared his insights on the spillover effect of the revelations of financial misconduct in a global setting. Lastly, Andrea Rozario of University of Illinois discussed whether and how AI laws can deter innovation.

On the second day, Ekaterina Neretina, from Bocconi University, presented her research on trading associations documenting firms’ incentives to join them and the product market consequences. Instead, Scott Liao of Rotman School of Management, pointed out the unintended consequences of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program documenting that firms subject to the GHG reporting requirements experience an increase in toxic chemicals. Suzie Noh, from Stanford, closed the event presenting her analysis of the costs of converting public information signals into stock prices.

In the words of Miles Gietzmann, Director of the Department of Accounting, “The Bocconi Accounting Symposium is a premier event that has brought together leading international academics to discuss groundbreaking research in accounting. With well-known speakers and engaging discussions, the event has provided valuable insights and will foster meaningful collaborations in the field.”

The 4th edition of the Symposium will be held on June 22nd and 23rd 2026 at the SDA Campus.
