AI @ Bocconi

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of the environment in which individuals and organizations operate every day. Universities have a responsibility to prepare people who are able to not only use these tools, but also understand them, critically assess them and guide their impact. This means not only interpreting ongoing developments, but anticipating them whenever possible: to read the change clearly and transform it into opportunities for growth and advancement.
At Bocconi, new technological transformations are not seen as predetermined outcomes, but rather as strategic choices. Thus, we aim to reinforce the role of new technologies and the ethical, human-centered integration of AI.

Francesco Billari, Rector
AI marks one of the most rapid and pervasive changes in recent history. Unlike previous revolutions, this one does not automate only repetitive tasks: it intervenes in complex cognitive activities, influencing learning, skills and professional roles.
The challenge is not to use more technology, but to use it better.

Bocconi's venture into AI stems from its longstanding tradition of teaching firmly rooted in quantitative methods, further developed over the past decade with the academic offer branching out first in data science and in computing sciences shortly thereafter. These disciplines now encompass the entire program range, from Bachelor degrees to PhD studies.

Bocconi has successfully introduced Bachelor programs in the areas of both Computer Science and AI, MSc programs in Data Science, AI and Data Analytics applied to the health sector, as well as a PhD program focused on Computer Science. To support students from diverse backgrounds, the University aims to provides a shared foundation that enables full engagement with AI-based content, which will be progressively integrated across programs through interdisciplinary electives.

This journey was enabled by strengthening the faculty with world-caliber domain experts, launching the Department in Computing Science in 2022, establishing dedicated Research Centers and Labs (such as BIDSA-Bocconi Institute for Data Science and Analytics, and other Labs in the area of AI) and equipping these knowledge hubs with advanced technology, such as High Performance Computing (HPC) and planned new infrastructures, to support their endeavors.

In the 2023–2024 academic year, the Rector’s team expanded with the introduction of the role of Dean for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting the University’s ongoing commitment to innovation and digital integration.

In addition to AI being a subject of teaching and research at Bocconi, these past few years have seen the university empowering its students, faculty and staff with training and tools, guiding them towards experimentation and responsible use. This has translated into enhancing internal capabilities and skills through the development of a proprietary playground (LUIGI - the Lab for University Innovation with GenAI Ideas), while staying atop of market advancements with a partnership with OpenAI and the campus-wide adoption of ChatGPT Edu in 2025.

AI Ready

Our Strategic Plan views AI not as a simple tool to be added to the curriculum, but as a structural condition that calls for new forms of literacy, new ways of teaching and renewed attention to the quality of thought.

AI ready means developing basic technical skills — data, models, algorithm logic — but also, and above all, judgment skills: verifying, contextualizing and understanding risks, biases and limits.

Our Principles

Transparency

We believe that trust in AI begins with openness. At Bocconi, the use of generative AI should be visible, explainable and clearly documented. Grounded in our long scientific tradition of analytical rigor, we treat AI not as a black box but as an object of inquiry.

Whether in teaching, learning or research, we expect members of our community to disclose when and how AI tools are used, to explain their purpose and to make their reasoning and choices clear and understandable to others.

Responsibility

AI is a powerful tool that supports learning, research and professional practice. One of Bocconi's strengths lies in understanding incentives, institutions and human behavior — and these perspectives also shape how we approach AI. We encourage its use across academic and career paths, while staying mindful of its limitations and biases.

Each member of the Bocconi community is responsible for using AI deliberately, ethically and with care — verifying its outputs, protecting data and privacy, and ensuring that AI strengthens, rather than replaces, critical thinking.

Accountability

Using AI does not replace the judgement of our students, faculty or staff. Consistent with our scientific tradition, human beings remain at the center of and fully accountable for all decisions, actions and outcomes involving the use of AI.

We expect our members to stand behind their work, justify how results were produced, correct errors when they arise and take ownership of the benefits and risks associated with AI use.

Respect

AI use must uphold human dignity and foster a fair, inclusive academic community. Respect for others — students, colleagues, research participants and society at large — guides responsible AI use.

Drawing on Bocconi’s longstanding engagement with law, ethics and public policy, we are committed to exploring the interplay of AI and society. That includes ensuring that AI is used deliberately and respectfully, protecting individuals and groups from harm or discrimination.
