Permit of Stay - renewal

In this section you can find some basic information to help you with the renewal of your Permit of Stay (for non-EU students).

The Permit of Stay is generally valid for one year and must be renewed at least 60 days before it expires

We recommend starting the renewal process 90 days before expiration.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR PERMIT OF STAY

Non-EU PhD Students

PhD students who are awaiting the renewal of their Permit of Stay may request a temporary permit (permesso di soggiorno provvisorio) only if:

  • They have a valid reason for leaving Italy (e.g., participation in conventions, conferences, summer schools, etc.); and
  • They return to Italy before the issuance of the renewed permit.

The temporary permit is valid for a maximum of 90 days.
How to Request a Temporary Permit

PhD students must go to the Police Station (Questura) at least 10 days before departure, bringing the original documents listed below, along with photocopies:

  • Receipt issued by the Italian Post Office certifying submission of the permit renewal application
  • Expired permit of stay
  • 4 passport-sized photographs
  • Passport
  • A letter in Italian explaining the reason for the request, issued by the PhD Administrative Assistant and signed by both the PhD Director and the Head of the PhD School Office
