Why We Must Do High Impact Research

, by Gianmario Verona - ordinario presso il Dipartimento di management e tecnologia, translated by Richard Greenslade
Rector Gianmario Verona underlines the importance of leading edge research for society, particularly in times of crisis, and explains the initiatives underway at Bocconi

Doing research, good research, is not enough. Research needs to be impactful and helpful in supporting the strategies and decisions of policymakers. At Bocconi we are convinced of this, and to stimulate the production of research relevant for both the scientific community and society, we have established the Research Impact Awards. The three winners of the second edition are: Carlo Favero, Alfonso Gambardella and Giuseppe Soda, respectively for their articles on Eurobonds, open innovation and informal networks.

Good research also needs good dissemination, to elicit debate and reflection and to stimulate dialogue between academia and the worlds of politics, business and civil society.

In a historical moment marked by growing uncertainty on the economic and geopolitical levels, institutions active in social science research like Bocconi are called upon to make a positive contribution, in method and merit, to the decision-making processes of politics and business.

From this same viewpoint comes Bocconi Research for Europe and the World Economy (BREWE), the new initiative to be inaugurated on 13 March with an event that focuses on globalization and new challenges for Europe. A highly topical theme, and not only for the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. The responses provided over the next few years to the crisis of European identity that we are now experiencing will involve us all as citizens even before they affect us as scholars. The future of Europe is an issue that must therefore be faced with rational scientific method to avoid being overwhelmed by fear and populism. We must all contribute to this debate together.
