Teaching and Research, the Passions of Stefano Caselli
During his middle school studies he loved to give private lessons to his classmates, in high school he wanted to write a series of papers. Stefano Caselli, confirmed as Dean of International Affairs in the team of new Rector Gianmario Verona, and Full Professor at the Department of Finance, has always had an overwhelming passion for teaching. "I began to study economics driven by the desire to confront myself with the real world", he says. "I am the type of person who wants to move forward, look for new challenges, set demanding goals".
His intellectual restlessness led him to study the interaction between the financial sector and the business system. "It is an ever-changing topic. I could never teach immutable subjects. I prefer the lively, unstable and, therefore, exciting ones". Caselli came from Liguria to Milan in 1993. The Bocconi Institute of Economics of Financial Intermediaries was recruiting young talents in Italian universities. He was contacted the day he graduated in Economics in Genoa. The morning after he was in Milan to talk to Roberto Ruozi. Two days later, he was already working at Bocconi. "When I am tired, like everyone is sometimes, I try to remind myself how lucky I am to work within an influential institution. I love challenges, working in open situations, managing complex negotiations: it's in my DNA. That is the reason why I enjoy working on the subject of internationalization. Now the challenge is to make Bocconi one of the most important institutions in Europe. It can be done and it is something that was unthinkable when I first moved here in 1993".
When he is not teaching, Caselli loves to travel (he often visits Asia and the United States for work and he returns there for pleasure nonetheless) and to write in the weekly supplement Corriere Economia – confronting with readers, he says, is a good test, contributing to debate is a duty. And he enjoys the positive outcomes of teaching. "Seeing generations of Bocconi students that take on responsible roles in society is ever surprising. It means that what we do has an impact on reality".
