Made in Bocconi the Best PhD Thesis of 2010
The Società italiana degli economist (SIE) has assigned the 2011 SIE Prize for the best PhD thesis to Fernanda Brollo, Brazilian, for her work with which last year she concluded her PhD in Economics in Bocconi. Brollo, now assistant professor at Universidad de Alicante, earned the acknowledgement for her thesis "Essays in Political Economy: Evidence from Brazil".
The thesis uses data gathered in Brazil to analyze the transfer of funds from a federal government to local municipalities and the effects it has on corruption and political participation in civil society, and thus the quality of politicians, and whether there are tactical motivations, of a political nature, in the allocation of federal transfers.
The prize is presented during the 52nd annual scientific meeting of the SIE (Rome, 14-15 October). A summary of the thesis will be published in the Rivista Italiana degli Economisti.
The three chapters of Brollo's thesis are under review for publication in American Political Science Review, American Economic Review and The Journal of Development Economics.
