Building research links with CIVICA short visits scheme

, by Tomaso Eridani
The new call is open, funding faculty visits to promote cross-university research across the CIVICA alliance. Bocconi’s Davide Paris talks about his experience of a visit at IE

Fostering collaborative activities, furthering existing links or establishing new ones, among faculty and postdoc researchers across the CIVICA alliance, of which Bocconi is a founding member. This is the aim of the CIVICA faculty short visits scheme which sees the call for the next round currently open, with application deadline on December 1.

The scheme gives professors and researchers across CIVICA the opportunity to visit other member institutions and the activities of the 2-5 day visits can include giving a CIVICA-branded talk, participating in a conference, organising/participating in workshops or seminars for PhD researchers, networking with other faculty and exploring new joint research projects. Funding covers travel and accommodation costs related to the visit.

Here, Davide Paris, professor of Constitutional Law at Bocconi, talks about his short visit at IE earlier this year:

-Why did you choose IE for your visit and what did you work on in your time there?

I had visited IE in Madrid for a conference a couple of years ago and I had been struck by the open, lively and international academic community of its Law School. The CIVICA short visit scheme gave me the opportunity to return for a dedicated stay, during which I could get to know the IE community better, connect with colleagues and meet with the students. During my visit, I discussed my research on the European Court of Human Rights and the Venice Commission with the IE faculty, gave a class in the Human Rights course of prof. Sergio Verdugo, and had several meetings with colleagues, to explore opportunities for further collaboration and joint projects.

-What are your main takeaways from your CIVICA short visit?

My visit to IE was intense and extremely enriching. The faculty seminar enabled me to discuss my research with an exceptionally qualified audience, who gave me new perspectives on the topic and helped me refine my ideas. Teaching the students was not less challenging. I adapted my lecture to the teaching approach of my hosting colleague, which is based on a strong interaction with the students. Not easy, but extremely useful: in this semester at Bocconi, I am applying the teaching method that I approached at IE. Overall, the CIVICA short visit at IE was very important to me.
