What Does TV Sound Like on the Radio?

Huge success for RadioVision, the Radio Bocconi show that talks about the small screen

6 October 2008. RadioVision, a Radio Bocconi show dedicated to the small screen premieres. The topic is rather unusual: an animosity between radio and television has been around since both media have had to coexist. The show's subtitle, "Video killed the radio star", a quote from The Buggles' famous song, confirms this friction.

Actually, talking about television on the radio has turned out to be a winning strategy: in a few short weeks the show has won over its audience, with a record number of listeners in the new season. "TV is a topic that lends itself easily to discussion on the radio", confirms Gianluca Martelli, the show's manager. "Everyone watched TV, and it's this familiarity that allows the audience to interact, to feel like they're part of the show".

Another positive aspect of RadioVision is its presenters' compatibility. Four students in their second year of the Bachelor of Economics and Management for Arts, Culture and Communications: Gianluca, Vanessa, Selene known as Selella, and Diego, already connected by a tight friendship even before their partnership on air. "The idea for the show started this summer at the beach", says Vanessa. "We were on vacation in Tropea, we know about the university radio and we decided to actively participate. The format was a little different at the beginning, we wanted to call it T.V.B – T.V.Bocconi, but after thinking about it more carefully, and to meet the programming needs, we came up with RadioVision".

The show airs Mondays and Thursday from 6pm to 7pm and consists of a more or less serious discussion around a theme, split up by four columns, two per episode. The topics to include in the list of points, the music and the set-up of the program are all chosen as a group, while each of the four speakers is in charge of their own column. Gianluca reports on TV On Air, a radio parody of various TV genres, Vanessa does TV Story, dedicated to shows that have made history on TV, Selene heads TV Spot, which looks at television ad campaigns ironically, and Diego puts together TV Life, which looks at TV dramas.

With the 10 November episode, a season of guest speakers was inaugurated. The first guest was Fabrizio Perretti, professor of Economics of Media and Internationalization Strategies at Bocconi. He discussed the role of TV in the age of You Tube, the changes it will face, TV dramas and other important formats abroad, political satire and the role of TV journalists. For anyone that didn't get a chance to tune in to the interview, reruns will be on air Tuesday and Saturday 11 and 15 November from 11pm to midnight.

In the upcoming two months RadioVision will have many more guests. Severino Salvemini, Study Program Director for the Bachelor of Economics and Management in Arts, Culture and Communications, the Slivers, a band from Lodi that will perform an acoustic concert live on air and the DJ Alessandro Fizzotti, presenter of FizzShow which airs on various radio channels all over Italy, will all be in front of the microphones.
