Vienna (Austria), CEMS Exchange Semester, Vienna University of Economics

Being an exchange student at Vienna University of Economics was a unique experience for me. As an obligation of my CEMS curriculum, I had to complete an exchange semester in one of the member universities of the CEMS community. Right now, I feel that Vienna was one of the best decisions I have made in my life, not only academically but also socially.

First of all, the CEMS program offers great opportunities for students to enhance theoretical management knowledge with various practical implementations. Among the courses I have attended I had the chance to work with several students from different countries. Comprehending different perspectives of this international environment presents you with a sensibility which would not be achieved so easily in any other way. This goes hand in hand with the study structure of the university. Actually, it provides the flexibility to work more with other colleagues rather than merely studying for an exam. Lectures are important but I really felt the importance of interaction during or outside of class.

Furthermore, Vienna and CEMS also provides various connections to companies. In addition to usual company presentations, the unique experience that allows you talk with many executives from different global companies helps one to realize his or her own interest and desire.

Another good thing during my exchange period was to realize that everybody was aware of the fact of having fun. Even after the very long discussions of projects, people are there to drink "glühwine" with you for a couple of hours. Especially starting with the end of November, Vienna turns into a "princess" as Christmas markets turns the city into a fabulous outlook. The joy and happiness of people are carried on streets and everybody welcomes Christmas with enthusiasm. The city makes you feel that atmosphere.

What about afterwards, you may ask. It all depends on you. You can find yourself at one of the exchange parties or a house party that is hosted by one of your mates. Long talks and nice pictures are all musts of this period. Even if you are not a big fan of parties, there are still numerous activities to do in the cultural capital of Central Europe. Especially if you are fan of classical music, Vienna provides a great opportunity to listen to famous Waltz concerts and operas at the famed Staatsoper. Not to mention the richness of the palaces and museums just in the heart of the city.

Prague, Budapest, Salzburg and many others... As long as you find the proper time to travel during your courses, as you surely will, Vienna stands as a critical hub. I am sure it is possible to obtain the best balance for all of these activities.

International experiences always depend on your expectations. As you expect more and strive for your desires, you get the essence out of it. Keep your enthusiasm high and try to obtain the most as it gives you astonishing experience not only in terms of theory and fun but also improving your personal skills.
