Tournament of the Universities
The most prestigious European universities are not just rivals in the rankings based on course evaluations and academic performance. In fact, three of the most influential schools on the Old Continent will also be competing in a sports tournament — striving to stand out not only on the pitch, but also in efforts to network and involve other universities in the upcoming years. “This must become a yearly event, a bit like certain traditional English college rivalries, Oxford vs Cambridge above all,” explains Riccardo Santolamazza, Director of Sport Operations of the Bocconi Sport Team. The three universities involved in the second edition of the tournament — which, this year, will be held in Madrid from 26–28 September and will be called the IE International Tournament — are host IE University, Sciences Po and Bocconi University. The first was held last year at Bocconi, under the name Bocconi International Sport Tournament. A range of team sports, both men’s and women’s, will be covered, including: men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s futsal, and women’s basketball.
“We will be there with over 80 athletes, for what is considered so far the largest overseas trip by one of our delegations,” says Marco De Santis, General Manager of Sport Operations. “Obviously in a year’s time, and increasingly in the future, we will try to introduce new disciplines in addition to the current ones.” Santolamazza continues and reveals that the event was created on Bocconi’s initiative, and “aims to bring together international universities which — like Bocconi, IE Madrid and Sciences Po — have similar sports programs and excellent facilities available to their students.”
