SDA Bocconi Brings China Closer to Italian Students

, by Tomaso Eridani, translated by Jenna Walker
Registration for the China Insight Competition will begin on 13 February, inviting Graduate students from all over Italy to show companies working in China their abilities in analyzing outlooks for the country

Teams challenge each other and make use of skills to analyze development prospectives for China and growth opportunities for Italian companies. This is the challenge the SDA Bocconi China Lab observatory and the China Insight Competition 2012 gives to Graduate students (in Master of Science programs) from all over Italy. Registration will be open between 13 February and 3 March. For students, it will also be an opportunity to show their abilities and experience to companies working in China, who are on the competition panel.

Last year open only to Bocconi students, this year's challenge is open to teams of 4-5 students from all over Italy who are currently enrolled in Graduate programs, preferably including a Chinese student or an Exchange student from China. An online bulletin board will also be available for anyone looking for a team to create or join.

The competition is based on two tracks: 'Opportunities in China', based on strategic analysis of the attractiveness of several sectors in China and 'China Outlook and Trends', focusing on the analysis of economic growth in China. On the registration application, teams will need to provide CVs and a cover letter. This information will be used to choose a maximum of 15 teams for each track.

Each selected team will need to produce a project summary package, in English, by 5 June, which includes a presentation of their analysis report and which may include a brief presentation video. Projects will then be evaluated by a committee of SDA faculty, industry experts and managers of companies with business in China (including Luxottica and Barilla) and the six finalist teams will be able to present their projects directly to the committee during the CIC Presentation Day in June.

"The competition aims to encourage students to study China and its outlook, and bring them closer to companies working in China," explains Fabrizio Peretti, Bocconi faculty member or China Lab coordinator. "It provides the most talented students from all over Italy the opportunity to concretely demonstrate their abilities to companies and evaluate their worth."

The top team from each track will win €1,000 and each member's CV will be sent to all the companies affiliated with China Lab. All members of the six finalist teams will also be invited to participate, free of charge, in the events organized by China Lab for one year.

China Lab began as a reference point and point of contact between faculty and students with an interest in China and companies already working in China or interested in being present in the country. The observatory aims to create a context for study, research and debate on the economic and entrepreneurial outlook in China, but also promote the education of students to develop the skills necessary to face the challenges that China sets for companies.
