IGIER: Uniting Academic Excellence and Policy-Relevant Research

, by Andrea Costa
A strong research community at the intersection of economics and policy studies

The Innocenzo Gasparini Institute for Economic Research (IGIER), named after one of Bocconi’s past rectors, stands as one of Europe’s leading centers for economic research. Since its founding, IGIER has cultivated a vibrant intellectual environment, attracting a distinguished network of scholars committed to advancing economic knowledge. Its director, economist Thomas Le Barbanchon (who took the helm in January, 2025), is keen on reaffirming and expanding its mission with renewed focus and ambition.

A tradition of excellence, a vision for the future

IGIER is known for its rigorous research standards and strong international orientation. The center brings together economists from a variety of disciplines—macro, micro, econometrics, finance, political economy, and more—who share a common commitment to high-quality, evidence-based research. Thomas Le Barbanchon has underscored his determination to uphold these standards, ensuring that IGIER remains a benchmark of academic integrity and innovation.

Empowering researchers and nurturing talent

An essential priority is supporting early-career researchers. By providing mentoring, visibility, and opportunities to engage with international peers, IGIER continues to be a launchpad for the next generation of economic scholars. As Le Barbanchon explains, “My desire is to bridge the divide between students and faculty, encouraging greater interaction, collaboration, and shared learning. This includes reinforcing IGIER’s role within the broader Bocconi ecosystem and ensuring that its research culture is inclusive, dynamic, and accessible.” Le Barbanchon wants to introduce specific initiatives designed to foster intellectual growth, collaboration, and visibility for young talent. These initiatives will complement existing ones such as the IGIER-BIDSA initiative, a collaboration with Bocconi’s Data Science and Analytics research center aimed at brilliant students who consider an academic career.

Grant success and collaborative growth

As external funding becomes ever more competitive, IGIER is investing in new ways of organizing and supporting scholarly work. Larger research teams, greater access to technical assistance, and enhanced project coordination are key elements of this evolving strategy. Researchers will find increased support in their bids for competitive funding, especially at the European level.

A place for open inquiry

Above all, IGIER remains committed to creating a space where excellent and independent research can flourish. Upholding academic freedom and encouraging a diversity of approaches and perspectives is central to the center’s identity. Whether in solo projects or collaborative teams, scholars at IGIER are supported in asking bold questions—and in seeking answers that matter.
