Homophobia and the Law, a Meeting at Bocconi

, by Davide Ripamonti, translated by Richard Greenslade
A book and a meeting at Bocconi, on 29 September, tell of the difficult path to equality

When the law justifies, and even promotes discrimination against any minority, it is correct to define it as "abominable". Those are the laws that gays and lesbians have faced around the world; and now after years of struggles and demands, in many countries the long wait for legal equality is over, and the law has redeemed itself.

That is the theme of the meeting organized by the Chair for International Law and the student association Best – Bocconi Equal Students, on 29 September, at Bocconi, to present the book L'abominevole diritto. Gay e lesbiche, giudici e legislatori, by Matteo Winkler, professor at Bocconi, and Gabriele Strazio, with a preface by Stefano Rodotà. Also in attendance will be Vittorio Lingiardi, professor at the university Sapienza di Roma, Stefano Basaglia, who teaches at SDA Bocconi, and Alessandro Rimassa, author of Generazione mille euro.

The discussion will dwell on the torturous progress of the law toward the recognition of certain basic rights, and on the situation in Italy, where Parliament appears to have pushed aside every initiative on civil unions and norma against homophobia.
