Food Waste: Policies and Best Practices for a 750 billion dollar problem

, by Andrea Celauro
At Bocconi on 20 May a conference promoted by the EU Scientific Steering Committee for Expo. More food is wasted than that needed to eradicate undernourishment in the world

Food waste, according to FAO estimates, is reaching astonishing figures: each year the equivalent of 750 billion dollars in food go up in smoke, or about 1/3 of the calories produced on the planet. That means that 14 million km2 of land and 250 km3 of water are used only to produce food that will simply be lost. And also to produce 3 billion tons of CO2. But the most striking fact is this: if there were no food waste in the world, hunger would not even exist. Everything that is produced annually but not consumed would be enough to feed the entire mass of people on Earth who suffer from malnutrition.

These numbers will be recalled and discussed in Milan on 20 May in Bocconi (Aula Magna, via Gobbi 5 - Milan, 9:30am), during the conference 'Food waste: from policies to best practices', where Italian and foreign experts on food waste and food policies will exchange ideas and seek solutions together with representatives from organizations that fight against food waste and from innovative companies and startups.

The conference, organized by Bocconi, is part of the activities promoted by the EU Scientific Steering Committee for Expo and is the last stop on the way to #FoodSavingBEC - Bocconi Expo2015 Competition, the international competition that from June 24 to July 1 will bring 140 students from around the world to Bocconi to discuss this issue and propose solutions.
