Bocconi to Create Unified Campus
There will be one large pedestrian area, full of green, which allows easy access between the various Università Bocconi buildings: with the Milan City Council's ok to the project to make the area around Via Gobbi, Piazza Sraffa (between Via Gobbi and Via Sabatini) and Via Toniolo closed to traffic and requalify it, a unified Bocconi campus is finally being realized. The proposal will cost 2.5 million euros, sustained entirely by Bocconi. It will "create a modern and urban university campus from which not only students will benefit, but also families and residents, with the logic of integration between the city and the university," as the Milan City Councilor for Mobility, Transportation and the Environment Edoardo Croci explained.
The objective of making the pedestrian area is to solve traffic problems in the area area Bocconi: the project includes a total of 14,500 square meters (10,500 on public land and 4,000 on private land) and calls for the reconstruction of the pavement on Via Gobbi and Via Toniolo, the arrangement of trees and plants at the end of Piazza Sraffa and the pavement on Via Sarfatti in front of the University buildings, with an elevation of the street level between Via Sarfatti and Via Bocconi to encourage a continuity between the university campus and Ravizza Park. A new public lighting system and a video surveillance system will also be created.
Along with the green light to the Bocconi project, the City of Milan also confirmed their commitment to other Milanese universities concerning sustainable transportation, thanks to a memorandum of intent approved by the Council on 20 March. The collaboration between the city administration and universities will aspire to create incentives for the use of public transport, with the promotion of discounted and supplementary tickets and memberships to be used on the entire network and with the improvement of signs (subways stations neighboring universities will receive adapted names, inserting the name of the university). Incentives will also be created for car sharing and car pooling, and the use of bicycles will also be supported, with an expansion of the bike sharing service, among other things.
