The many sides of Angelo Sraffa: jurist, cultural organizer and bibliophile

A virtual exhibition exploring a central figure in Bocconi’s history

Bocconi Library and Archives are pleased to present a new virtual exhibition dedicated to Angelo Sraffa, distinguished jurist, professor, and key figure in the life of the University.

Through archival documents and bibliographic sources, the exhibition retraces the deep connection that bound Sraffa to “his” university for nearly his entire professional life: from his appointment in 1902 as Professor of Commercial Law, to his tenure as Rector, and later as a member of the University Board, from which he resigned in 1934.

The exhibition also offers a unique glimpse into a lesser-known side of his personality: not only a prominent scholar and respected professional, but also a refined bibliophile.

The core sections of the exhibition focus on a selection from his extensive personal library, which was partly donated to the University by his family after his death. Special attention is given to several particularly valuable groups: ancient legal texts, a Miscellanea personally compiled by Sraffa, and a number of significant volumes from the humanistic segment of his collection.

The result is a portrait of a man of profound humanistic culture and wide-ranging intellectual interests, whose legacy continues to resonate with the history and identity of the University.
