Inclusive Communication Guidelines

The Inclusive Communication Guidelines help the entire University community — faculty, staff and students — use language that respects diversity and promotes inclusion.

Available in English and Italian, the document offers practical advice and concrete examples for inclusive written and verbal communication. Each version reflects the characteristics of its language, helping us adopt non-discriminatory terminology, recognize diversity, and reduce unconscious bias.

The guidelines address key themes of inclusivity, including: gender, LGBTQIA+ identity, race and ethnicity, and disability and specific learning disorders. The latest version, updated in October 2026, is complemented by additional reflections on age, religion and belief, socioeconomic status, and migration backgrounds, alongside guidance on inclusive visual representation.

Language evolves in response to social, cultural, technological and political changes, and these guidelines may evolve over time to reflect those developments.
