During the Internship

The supervisor received a request to complete an evaluation form halfway through the internship: what should we do?

By completing this form (mid-term evaluation), the company supervisor plays the role of moderator of the experience for support and guidance, providing the intern with the information that emerged from objective observation of the first part of the experience. This is why it is helpful that the supervisor completes a realistic and constructive evaluation with a critical sense and is as objective as possible of the activities carried out and shares this with the intern. As a result, the value of sharing this information derives from the chance to make any corrections needed in order to maximize the effectiveness of the experience.

The educational project lists a company supervisor that is not the person who will actually support the intern. Should a new document be drawn up?

Yes, after verifying that the company supervisor’s name has been registered as a company contact, contact the Internship Office to change the educational project. The University will make the change and the correct “Internship Agreement” document will be published once again in the “My Internships” area in the agreements and attachments section.

Are interns covered in case of accident or for damages towards objects or third parties?

Yes, the insurance policies included in the educational project cover accidents at the workplace and civil responsibility towards objects or third parties. In case of accident or damage towards objects or people during the completion of the internship, the Company should contact the University in a timely manner for the preparation of the reporting documentation.

Are interns covered in case of transfers off the company premises?

Yes, the insurance policies that cover accidents at the workplace and civil responsibility towards objects or third parties also include transfers off the company premises, as long as activities carried out off company premises are ascribable to what is indicated in the educational project and the intern is always with his/her supervisor or a member of the team. Transfers have always to be communicated by the Company to the University. For transfers in a Country other than the one of the Internship please contact the University to evaluate the possibility for the trip.

Can internships be extended?

An extension can be requested before the end of the internship. The Internship Office will carefully evaluate the reasons behind the request and will act accordingly.

The extension period must be communicated and justified in advance by the Company to the Internship Office through JobGate and the intern must access the portal and confirm the extension requested by the Company.

What is the maximum duration of an extension?

The duration of an internship cannot exceed 6 months – extensions included.

Can internships have temporarily breaks?

Absence is permitted for a few valid reasons such as illness or public holidays. In these cases, the Company must communicate the temporary break on JobGate. Should the temporary break affect the minimum duration of a curricular internship, the period must be made up with an extension.

Please note that binding academic commitments (exam days and faculty office hours) do not need to be communicated to the University if they do not exceed one day.

Please note that the Internship Office will monitor internships to control their quality and progress as well as to be sure that they are being carried out as planned. In case of absence without communication, the Internship Office can submit interns to the disciplinary commission and/or reject credit recognition.

Are temporary breaks automatically made up with an extension?

No, the Company should request an extension to make up for temporary breaks.

What steps are required to cancel an internship?

Cancelling an internship is possible for serious and/or justified reasons and reasons of force majeure. Cancellations, with a related justification, must be communicated in a timely manner by the Company to the University through JobGate. The intern must access the portal, confirm the cancellation registered by the Company and specify his/her justifications.
