At the Italian championships, the Bocconi student finished behind Olympic champion Palmisano in the 3km race walk. She also broke a record that had stood since 1991

Only multiple Olympic, world and European medallist Antonella Palmisano outperformed Sofia Fiorini at the Italian Indoor Athletics Championships held in Ancona from February 27 to March 1. Sofia, a student enrolled in the Business and Management bachelor at Bocconi, finished second in the 3km race walk behind the gold medallist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. But above all, she set a new Italian under-23 record, which had been held since 1991 by a true legend of Italian race walking, Annarita Sidoti. “The record was my real goal in this race,” says Sofia, “even though I didn't think I would beat it by 14 seconds. Now my goal is the World Championships, which will be held from April 12 in Brasilia, where I will compete in the marathon. My dream? A place in the top 10. Then in August there will be the European Championships in Birmingham, for which I still have to qualify."

Looking back just two years ago, when she moved to Milan to attend Bocconi University, where is she now in her career? Further ahead or further behind than expected? “Much further ahead,” she says with conviction, “I thought I would only achieve these results in a couple of years. Settling into my new life, between studying and training, has been much easier and quicker than expected.” And Los Angeles 2028 also seems less far away.
