A New Role for Oreste Pollicino
Oreste Pollicino, a Bocconi constitutionalist and one of Europe's leading experts on law and artificial intelligence, is the new Coordinator of the Data Governance and AI Compliance Committee (requested by the School of Economic and Social Policy), the technical body, chaired by Valerio De Luca, that aims to support the implementation of the European AI Act in Italy.
“The real challenge is not just regulating AI,” Oreste Pollicino comments, “but building an architecture of trust. A governance capable of ensuring transparency, accountability and effective protection of rights, even in the presence of opaque and potentially invasive algorithmic systems.” According to the professor, it is time to move beyond the dichotomy between innovation and rights: “True progress is that which manages to reconcile them.”
A magna cum laude graduate of Messina and educated in Bologna, Bruges and Oxford, Oreste Pollicino is Professor of Constitutional Law and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence at Bocconi, where he also directs the LL.M. in Law of Technology and Automated Systems. In Brussels, he chairs DICOPO - Centre on Digital Constitutionalism and Policy and is one of the few Italians in the EU Plenary for the first Code of Conduct for General Purpose AI.
“We have a very delicate transition ahead of us,” he observes, “because the AI Act, for all its ambitions, will only be effective if we manage to build an ecosystem in which standards do not remain a dead letter. And this also comes from the ability of institutions to interact with business, academia and civil society.”
In his recent book written with Pietro Dunn, Intelligenza artificiale e democrazia (Bocconi University Press), he addresses AI not only as a legal-technical issue, but as a test case for the resilience of our constitutional values. “Artificial intelligence puts fundamental concepts such as equity, freedom of expression, and data protection under stress. That's why,” Pollicino concludes, “Law must once again become a generative force, capable of guiding the transformations underway.”
