Innovation and Resources. A Paper by Troilo Wins the JPIM Award

, by Benedetta Ciotto
An award for quality research goes to Gabriele Troilo and two coauthors' work on the relation between radical innovation and slack resources

The paper More Innovation with Less? A Strategic Contingency View of Slack Resources, Information Search, and Radical Innovation by Gabriele Troilo (Department of Marketing) and two coauthors has been recognized by the Journal of Product Innovation Management as the best among the 60 published in 2014.

Gabriele Troilo (Department of Marketing), Luigi M. De Luca (Cardiff Business School) and Kwaku Atuahene-Gima (China Europe International Business School), started working on the article in 2010, collecting records on a sample of 363 firms operating in China. The study investigates the positive relation between slack resources and radical innovation, that is the kind of innovation that research hasn't analyzed yet, being unthinkable in the past and that often leads to the creation of new firms and markets.

The Journal of Product Innovation Management is an important publication which once a year selects and rewards the best published paper, among 60 others. Troilo and the two coauthors are invited on November 7 to formally receive the award in Anaheim, California. "To us, it means the recognition of our commitment to a quality research activity. We are very satisfied, considering that there were many other papers", says Troilo. "Our collaboration continues: we are working on a project concerning radical innovation and competitive advantage. Now we are in the phase of data collection".

Collaboration between the three coauthors started many years ago, when De Luca was a Business Administration & Management Ph.D. student in Bocconi University, having Troilo as Supervisor and Atuahene-Gima as co-advisor for his thesis.
