Giuseppe Savaré Wins Europe Funding

, by Andrea Costa
His project studying complex systems has been selected for an Advanced Grant. It is the 66th ERC grant won at Bocconi

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded an Advanced Grant to Giuseppe Savaré of the Department of Decision Sciences at Bocconi University for his project OPTiMiSE — Optimal Transport and Metric Structures for Evolution Problems. The five-year project, hosted at the Bocconi Institute for Data Science and Analytics (BIDSA), aims to explore how geometry and variational principles can offer new keys to understanding the evolution of complex systems.

By combining innovative mathematical tools, OPTiMiSE aims to address some of the most relevant open problems in contemporary mathematics, while opening up new directions for applicable research in fields ranging from physics to data science. “I am particularly honored to receive this grant, which I also dedicate to the valuable Italian and European network of outstanding mathematicians with whom I have been fortunate to collaborate over the years,” comments Giuseppe Savaré. “The project studies the evolution of complex systems in irregular and nonlinear environments, combining variational methods and geometric views with ideas from Optimal Transport theory. It will be a great opportunity to attract and support a group of bright young people and contribute to the strengthening of our University's mathematical and scientific community.”

This project is one of 25 winners among those submitted by Italian institutions. Since the inception of this European program, Bocconi has been awarded 66 grants, 35 of which are still active. Advanced Grants are reserved for “outstanding researchers (...) with a recognized track record of research achievements. Researchers must demonstrate the innovative nature, ambition and feasibility of their research proposal.”

The European Research Council, established by the European Union in 2007, is Europe's leading funding organization for research excellence. Through its grants, it funds researchers of all nationalities and ages to run projects across Europe. The total ERC budget from 2021 to 2027 is more than 16 billion euros, under the Horizon Europe program, under the responsibility of the European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.
