Federico Marchetti, founder and CEO of YOOX Group, is the Bocconi Alumnus of the year 2014. The award recognizes an alumnus who has distinguished himself for adherence to the values of professionalism, initiative, integrity, accountability and openness to pluralism. This year's winning entrepreneur earned a degree from Bocconi in 1993 with a thesis on the role of Japanese securities houses in the securities market.
The award will be presented Friday, 17 October the President of the Bocconi Alumni Association, Pietro Guindani, in the course of an evening to be attended by the leaders of Università Bocconi, including President Mario Monti, Rector Andrea Sironi and CEO Bruno Pavesi.
Born in Ravenna in 1969, Federico Marchetti graduated in Economics from Bocconi and got an MBA from Columbia University. After working in the corporate world, serving as an advisor to a number of entrepreneurs and designers in the fashion industry, he then engaged a new adventure: the internet. In 2000 he founded YOOX, a perfect synthesis between his business vision and passion for fashion and design. In 2012, Marchetti received from President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano the Leonardo prize for innovation, which recognizes YOOX Group as the most innovative company in Italy.
Pietro Guindani, president of Bocconi Alumni Association, gave the reasons for the choice: "Over 14 years of intensive work, Federico gave birth to YOOX, the pioneer of fashion e-commerce, operating on a global scale and able to compete with the giants in the world of e-commerce. Thanks to his talent as an innovator, Federico gave Italy the first global company in the world of online retailing. Federico Marchetti is therefore a model for all of our Alumni, a model to be inspired by and to emulate."
"I would like to thank Bocconi for giving me the economic underpinnings essential for an entrepreneur in a globalized and complex world, and I thank all the people who work at YOOX, without whom I would never have been able to build such a fine company," replies Federico Marchetti, " YOOX is proof that in Italy it is still possible to start a business from scratch while relying on the competitive advantage of being Italian in certain areas where we still have a little something more to give."
