SDA and CERGAS' Research Leads to a Project Awarded by the President of the Republic

, by Fabio Todesco
The subject of the work by Valeria Tozzi and Guglielmo Pacileo for the San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in Orbassano is the care of multiple sclerosis

A Diagnosis, therapy and care path (Percorso diagnostico terapeutico assistenziale –PDTA, i.e. an organizational model which defines the course a patient has to follow from the first contact with a doctor up to the diagnosis and the therapy) for the care of multiple sclerosis (MS) developed by the San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in Orbassano, on the basis of a research by SDA Bocconi and CERGAS, has been awarded a Medal of the Presidency of the Republic.

The aim of the research and of the PDTA was to codify a structured path which could both improve the care of MS patients and optimize the use of resources.

The research by Valeria Tozzi and Guglielmo Pacileo highlighted that the needs of the MS patients deeply change as movement impairment progresses and the role of the neurologist has to change accordingly. If, at the first stages of the infirmity, the neurologist is the sole decision maker, when the illness gets more complex other professionals have to be involved and the neurologist's role shifts to the coordination of different caring figures operating both in the hospital and in the field.
