Let's Meet Tonight. And Do Some Research

, by Fabio Todesco
Three Bocconi laboratories will participate in MeetmeTonight, the Milanese edition of the European Researchers' Night. Take note: social sciences can experiment too

How ads and product packaging affect our buying choices; the ways scientific research results can be represented; cooperative and risky behavior are the topics of the three Bocconi laboratories at MeetmeTonight, the Milanese edition of the European Researchers' Night (25 and 26 September, 11 a.m – 10 p.m., Giardini Indro Montanelli and 25 September, 6 p.m. – 12:00 p.m, Museo nazionale scienza e tecnologia Leonardo Da Vinci).

At its fourth edition, this year MeetmeTonight doubles up its duration and encompasses Bocconi University as main partner.

"Economics and social sciences make more and more use of laboratory experiments", Bocconi Rector, Andrea Sironi, says. "That's one of the reasons why it's a pleasure to cooperate with other Milanese universities in an event aimed to shed light on a city university system capable of attracting researchers and students from the rest of Italy and abroad".

In Piccolo spazio pubblicità (Small space for advertisement) CERMES, Center for Research on Marketing and Services researchers use an eye-tracker to show what, in an ad, attracts viewers' attention and, in a separate experiment, compare people's assessment of a product after a blind test and after exposure to its packaging.

In Il network di Arianna (Ariadne's network) ASK, Art Science and Knowledge researchers will show how to visualize the invisible threads that shape personal networks and how these visualization tools can be used in order to disseminate complex research results regarding arts, education and culture.

In Vivere pericolosamente, capire facilmente (Living riskily, understanding easily) BELSS, Bocconi experimental laboratory for the social sciences scholars will invite visitors to play individual or strategic choice games in order to make them ponder on personal and environmental features which affect our decisions.

All Bocconi activities will be at via Palestro's Giardini Indro Montanelli. Admission is free.

MeetmeTonight is organized by Politecnico di Milano, Università degli Studi di Milano, Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca, Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia and Comune di Milano, with contributions from Regione Lombardia and Fondazione Cariplo.
