Bocconi PhD School, a School for Social Sciences
Five programs, an international school, many strengths. Wednesday 23 September will be the PhD Day (at 5pm, Aula Magna of via Gobbi), when Bocconi PhD School presents itself to MA students. The targeted audience potentially involves students of economics and management, engineering, mathematics, law and political science.
The school has established itself as an international hub, equaling its prestigious European counterparts. Last year 70% of candidates were foreign students and 30% were Italian students, while international academy is the main placement option, along with international institutions, research centers and large enterprises.
The PhD School offers 4-year programs in Business Administration and Management; Public Policy and Administration; Statistics; Economics and Finance and a three-year program in Legal Studies. "But its biggest strength is the multidisciplinary approach", explains the school's Dean, Pierpaolo Battigalli. "At Bocconi University internationally renowned professors and PhD students work in the same building and proximity encourages interchange. The multidisciplinary approach results not only from the formal possibility to choose electives from the other PhDs, but also from physical proximity, which enables a real interchange."
"The programs" adds the director, "share the same methodological rigor, which arises from a common quantitative ground, in which math is understood as a logical/deductive system that teaches you a cast of mind, rather than a collection of recipes to make calculations. Our aim is to educate individuals who are able to do research and to contribute to scientific knowledge."
"What we are going to present on Wednesday" Battigalli concludes, "is not only a set of programs, but a real doctoral school of social sciences."
