, by Fabio Todesco
Over 1,500 scholars and practitioners will occupy Bocconi's classrooms from 15th to 18th December, discussing how information systems are reshaping society

With 1,500 registred participants, 90 sessions and 250 presentations ICIS 2013, the annual conference of the Association for Information Systems (Università Bocconi, 15-18 December), is the most prestigious gathering of scholars and practitioners of information systems in the world. At its 34th edition, the conference is hosted in Europe for the fifth time and in Italy for the first.

Francesco Caio, CEO of Avio Aero and head of Agenda digitale italiana, will pronounce the opening keynote speech about responsible digital leadership.

As evidence of its relevance to the corporate world, the conference has an unprecedented quantity and quality of partners: Accenture, BIP, Cisco, Engineering, ENI, HP, IBM, Microsoft, NTT DATA, Oracle, Reply, Vodafone, Esprinet, SAP and Board.

Reshaping Society through Information Systems Design is the conference theme, which will be articulated into 20 tracks, analyzing the relationship between information systems and every facet of human life, starting with corporate life. "Information systems are changing everyday life in multiple ways", Münster University's Jörg Becker, conference co-chair, explains, "and if scholars studying the relationship between information systems and corporations have until recently focused their attention on marketing and communication issues, nowadays the production process is the most investigated topic".

"Another research stream", Bocconi's Ferdinando Pennarola, the other conference co-chair, says, "involves technologies' diffusion and adoption, the fact that users exploit just a tiny part of their potential, the study of consumer electronic devices' interfaces which, in the last 15 years, have changed in a surprisingly limited way".

The CIO Track (Monday, 16 December, 14:00 and Tuesday, 17 December, 08:00) chaired by Gianluigi Castelli, ENI's CIO, is directed to people in charge of corporate information systems. The speakers will be David Chalmers (Chief Technologist EMEA, HP), Giuseppe Gorla (Head Technology Consulting, Accenture), Shinichi Yokohama (Head Of Strategy Controlling and Integration Global Business Sector, NTT DATA), Federico Casalegno (Director Mobile Experience Lab, MIT), Michelle Senecal De Fonseca (Director Cloud & Hosting Services, Vodafone), Nicola Ciniero (President and managing Director, IBM Italia), Lars Fanstrom (Senior Vice President Marketing, Board), Yesha Sivan (Managing Editor, The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research), Massimo Canducci (Innovation Director, Engineering), Mario Derba (Sales VP, Systems, South Europe, Oracle), Paolo Campoli (Head of EMEAR SP Architectures & CTO at Cisco Systems, Cisco), Filippo Rizzante (CTO, Reply), Fabio Troiani (Managing Director of Business Integration, BIP), Antonio Gullì (Bing Search Engine Principal Dev Manager, Microsoft).
