Exploring the Contemporary World: How Media Impacts Our Life and Why It Matters
There is one thing we all do constantly, from the moment we wake up to the moment we set our alarm for the next day: consume media. We scroll through social media feeds, read (or ignore) geopolitical news notifications, watch TV series, follow the latest debates on TikTok and other platforms, tune in to major cultural events, and keep up with trends, public conversations, and global developments.
We are immersed in a continuous flow of information and content. Yet, how often do we stop and ask ourselves: Why is this story being presented in this way? How are algorithms shaping the way I perceive reality? And, most importantly, why does all of this matter to me?
This series of open meetings invites participants to critically explore the media landscape and better understand how media narratives shape public discourse, influence perceptions, and affect our understanding of the world.
Semester I: Understanding the Media Landscape and Global Politics
What Are Media Events? | 3/11 h. 6:15-8pm
Why do certain events capture our attention more than others? We will explore how media narratives are built and introduced to the upcoming U.S. Midterm Elections as a key case study.
Post U.S. Midterms: Why Do They Matter? | 10/11 h. 6:15-8pm
After the elections, we will analyze media coverage and public reactions, using the U.S. Midterms to better understand the interplay between politics, media, and public opinion.
Pop Culture & Entertainment: Oscars, Grammys, and Major Cultural Events | 24/11 h. 6:15-8pm
From award ceremonies to major cultural spectacles, we will examine how entertainment reflects and shapes cultural trends, social debates, and global conversations.
The course consists of two distinct modules, with the second module taking place during the second semester of the academic year.

Ennio Terrasi Borghesan and Giulia Vallarella

Ennio Terrasi Borghesan has been a Teaching Assistant at Bocconi since 2020, supporting courses in management, media, and culture. He is a media professional specializing in sports communication and has covered major international events, including Basketball World Cups and European Championships, both as a reporter and commentator. A Bocconi CLEACC graduate, he was also an exchange student in Uruguay.
Giulia Vallarella is a freelance audiovisual producer working across film, television, and multimedia production. A Bocconi graduate, she completed both the CLEACC bachelor's and the ACME master's, with exchange experiences in Spain and Mexico. Combining her passion for cinema and the arts with a management background, she has engaged in video production for several years, gaining experience in advertising and the field of contemporary visual arts.
