Escher at Mudec in Milan

13 NOVEMBER 2025: GUIDED TOUR AND WORKSHOP

“M.C. Escher. Between Art and Science” at Mudec, Milan

“Paradox as a Critical Lens: Breaking Symmetry”

The exhibition M.C. Escher. Between Art and Science, at MUDEC in Milan from September 25 to February 8, 2026, brings back to the city, after a ten-year absence, one of the most fascinating and recognizable artists of the twentieth century, Maurits Cornelis Escher (Netherlands, 1898–1972).

Through a project entirely dedicated to him, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on his artistic journey.

Known for his impossible architectures, optical illusions, tessellations, and metamorphoses, M.C. Escher created a unique visual language that bridges art and mathematics. A mathematics not made of the abstract reasoning of professional academics, but of long, meticulous, and passionate work, rooted in a more intuitive and perceptive approach.

In Escher, art and science merge into a vision that is rigorous, inventive, and deeply personal, a guiding thread that strongly defines the exhibition.

The workshop, inspired by Escher’s works such as Circle Limit III, Order and Chaos, and Development, invites students to reflect on order, symmetry, norms, and perception through a guided analysis of the exhibition.

During the workshop, students, divided into groups of four, create a visual map of social paradoxes. Starting from a regular graphic pattern representing order, they choose a social theme such as marginalization, gender stereotypes, inequalities, conflicts between conformity and identity, or discrimination, and express it by intentionally altering the pattern: interrupting, deforming, or contaminating it with colors, marks, and words—just as Escher moves from order to chaos.

The workshop concludes with a collective presentation, where each group shares their work and reflects on how change can challenge the apparent order we usually observe.
