Body Language Across Cultures

A gesture that means “come here” in one country may mean “go away” in another. A gaze held a second too long can be interpreted as confidence or, conversely, as a sign of disrespect. Even before we speak, our bodies are already communicating something, and in a foreign environment that message is not always understood as intended.

This is precisely where theatre feels at home: in the space where a glance, a pause, a step forward or backward can carry as much meaning as words.

Workshop Overview

This four-session workshop, led by Tobia Rossi, uses theatrical techniques to explore body language across different cultures.

Through theatre exercises, improvisation activities, and work on short scenes, participants will experience the crucial role of eye contact, gestures, stage presence, and spatial awareness in building relationships with others. Particular attention will be given to proxemics, the study of how people use distance and space in communication.

Designed especially for international students, the workshop provides a space for expression, interaction, and dialogue, encouraging participants to experience cultural diversity as a valuable resource for listening, collaboration, and communication rather than as a source of uncertainty.

In very practical terms, the workshop is an opportunity to develop the ability to navigate and interpret new environments, a skill that can be useful from day one in the classroom, in group work, or simply in a room full of people whose social cues are still unfamiliar.

This course will be held in the Campus Life space, via Bocconi 12 from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. 

The activity is open also to Faculty and Staff Members, but priority will be given to students.
