In Italy, the National Health Service (SSN) is provided by a public healthcare service. Only foreign citizens with a valid permit of stay have access to the service.
EU students are required to have the European Health Insurance Card (if already effective) or a similar private insurance policy with international validity in order to be able to access health care in Italy. To find out more, before leaving to Italy, contact your national social security office or its local branches. Please note that the European Health Insurance Card does not replace normal travel insurance. It only covers necessary care following an accident, for example, or on-going care for a serious medical condition.
In order to get the VISA/Permit of Stay non-EU students must show evidence of a certified health insurance coverage (it is recommended to have a copy certified/sealed by the Italian Consulate or Embassy).
