The research domain of the research center has progressively widened over time. Next to traditional focus on economic relations between Latin America and the EU and of the regional economic integration process, two other research areas have developed: one concerning the enlargement to the East of European Integration (PECO Area); another focusing on the new policy of partnership between the EU and the countries of the Mediterranean basin (MED Area).

In undertaking its research activities, ISLA conducts theoretically founded and empirically verifiable analyses on the economic regions of the world listed above. Although touching on both macro- and micro-economic aspects, the main thrust of the research effort focuses on industrial cooperation and FDI, the comparative analysis of intra-regional economic integration processes, and the evaluation of the potential impacts of European integration on the three macro-regions considered.
